29th June 2011
On Saturday 25th June, eight JCG students travelled to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
The group were lucky enough to see Rafael Nadal, Roger Federa, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki in action, to name but a few. They also witnessed some promising action from Heather Watson who, despite losing, proved an excellent role model for future Channel Island champions by showing great sportsmanship and dedication throughout her doubles match.
The pupils each got a chance to experience the atmosphere on Centre Court, Court One and the surrounding grounds. Throughout the day they took it in turns to swap between show courts, taking time in between to purchase the obligatory strawberries and cream and giant pink tennis balls.
A fantastic experience was had by all and the traditional rain clouds stayed at bay for the entire trip. As the group left the grounds in the evening, Lindsay Davenport signed her autograph for some of the excited pupils who had been attracted by the crowd gathering around her. Unfortunately, the prowess of the former Grand Slam champion was wasted on the girls as cries of “who was that?” soon filled the air.
