JCG appoints Composer-in-Residence

Monday 29th September 2014

Toby Huelin

JCG is excited to announce that Toby Huelin has been appointed as Composer-in-Residence for the Autumn term.

During Toby’s residency he will be working closely with A Level and GCSE Music students, and also with the ensembles at JCG, writing new works, and helping students to realise their own musical ideas. He is also organising a series of ‘Making Music’ Workshops (for parents, students and staff) on the subject of creating new music, and will be delivering an ‘Inquiring Minds’ lecture/concert on the topic Thinking Musically later in term.

After an early musical education in Jersey, winning in the PwC Young Musician of the Year competition four years ago, Toby read Music at Oxford University, graduating earlier in the summer. He has had works performed by ensembles including the BBC Singers, the Cavaleri Quartet and the New Music Players. Toby is particularly interested in music for theatre and music for the voice, and worked with Jersey College for Girls last summer on his chamber opera In Her Eyes, which was performed by A Level and GCSE students from the college, along with a group of students from Oxford University. He has received instruction and support from composers including Eric Whitacre (Five Hebrew Love Songs, The Seal Lullaby) and Dana P. Rowe (The Witches of Eastwick).

For more information, please email Toby at t.huelin@jcg.sch.je.
